January 2021 Income Report
I’ve worked in financial sales for the majority of my career. I was mostly the only black woman on my team. Looking back, some of it was a blessing. I got really comfortable talking about money. My white, male colleagues had no issue discussing their income. It was a constant competition to see who could make more. As a natural observer, I sat back, listened, and took notes. Their comfortability discussing their numbers made me uneasy at first. That’s just not something we’re culturally taught to do. It’s frowned upon and seen as boasting or bragging in our community.
When I started my blog, Miss Sistanomics, back in 2016, I started following a blogger named Melyssa Griffin. I became obsessed with reading her blog, especially her monthly income reports. I was fascinated with her growth and her transparency. The following year, I began reading Courtney Sanders' blog which was originally called Think and Grow Chick. Courtney started doing income reports as well. She was the first black woman I knew who put their numbers out there. Eventually, I found others like Maya Elious and her sister, Mattie James.
One of my core values is transparency. I enjoyed reading their blogs because I value transparency. They were no different than the white men who I sat beside every day. The thing I learned the most from those white men, is how to ask for what I want. They asked for more money. They discussed their income and it HELPED them. So, I want to be that person for you. I know everyone will not subscribe to my way of thinking and that’s fine. As a way of holding myself accountable, and you as well, I invite you to start keeping monthly income reports and share them with somebody. If you’d like to send it to me, that’s great! I’ll keep your information confidential. If not me, maybe your business bestie. Get comfortable sharing your numbers and saying, aloud, how much you want to make and keep in 2021.
