I Have A Dream
Today, we celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We recognize him for his activism, ministry, and his pioneering efforts to create a different America for folks that look like you and me. Undoubtedly, you’ve already seen numerous quotes, videos, and think pieces about who he was and the impact he had on today. Most notably, you’ve more than likely seen snippets or references to his infamous, I Have A Dream speech. Folks love to quote that speech. It’s inspirational and motivational. Hope exudes from his words and resonates with our deep desire to belong.
But dreaming comes with a cost.
As Dr. Dharius Daniels states, “It’s one thing to dream, it’s another thing to live your dream.”
What are you willing to do to live your dream?
Are you willing to leave what’s comfortable to be successful?
Are you willing to become the person you need to be to realize the dream?
If you’re anything like me, you went into business because you had a dream. My dream is tied to having a deep desire to give tools to the black community to build wealth. It’s that simple. But more than dreaming about it, I had to envision it.
I recently decided to add this visualization exercise to my coaching sessions. I went through it myself and found it to be very powerful. Our dreams tend to live in our heads and this exercise allowed me to take that dream and put it on paper.
Here’s the link to the video that inspired my visualization exercise: Draw Your Future
It’s a powerful exercise that coincides with your goals. The dream comes first, then goals are created to reach the dream.
Take the time to write down your dream. That’s the thing that will keep you going. That’s the thing that will make you not give up, to invest in the coach, invest in the accountant, invest in marketing, hire a team member, show up for your clients, fail, and get back up. The dream is why you started this thing in the first place. Make sure you keep it before you.
